Explosive Shooting

A short clip for your mental image

Earlier tonight I came across a nifty slow-motion close-up of Farjestad BK (SHL) player Magnus Nygren shooting a snap shot.

Nygren’s upper-body shape is quite good, though an NHL all-star would’ve transitioned from catch to shot without dusting the puck off.

Instead, pay attention to Nygren’s lower body. It’s hard to see from the usual TV angle, but many professionals actually explode from their feet and leave the ice to then create maximum downforce into their shot. We see that well in the clip above.

Getting some air on your shot is something you can experiment with whether training on- or off-ice. Over time you’ll shoot harder with less conscious effort, which frees you up to make a late adjustment to beat the goalie (related read).
