The NHL's Next Generational Player?

Workshop 127: Gavin McKenna (2007-born LW, WHL)

This is the first of a video series breaking down prospective NHL draft picks in the 2005-2007 birth years. I’ll examine their projectability through a player development lens and discuss strengths, weaknesses and growth opportunities.

This series will provide value for:

  • High-level players looking to learn from their peers

  • AAA and junior hockey parents looking to improve their knowledge

  • Coaches/scouts/analysts looking to refine their diagnostic skills

Gavin McKenna is only 16 years old, but remember the name.

The 2026 NHL draft eligible forward will score at least 92 points in the WHL. As a player two years out from his draft season (D-2), this scoring pace puts him well above that of Connor McDavid (66pts in 63 games).

McKenna is a remarkable talent with an NHL-ready offensive game.

But even generational players can get better at their craft. And they do.

Watch the video above to understand:

  • How McKenna combines his skating & hands to create advantages

  • Why his offensive skillset will transfer to the NHL

  • The seemingly-minor deficiency that may alter the course of his pro career (for paid subscribers only)
