How to Dominate a Zone Defense

Since the start of the series, the Carolina Hurricanes have done a good job finding space against Vegas’ zonal Box+1 defense zone coverage.

In Game Two, CAR continued to apply consistent pressure, out-shooting the Golden Knights 65-34 thanks to its ability to establish and then extend zone time.

Here are six simple, repeatable patterns that offensive teams can use to exploit a Box+1 zone defense. (Raw clip download link available at the bottom of the page.)

1. Corner Pop to Strong-Side Dot

On a stalled wall puck, Vegas’ Ds and Ws set the box, while C is the +1 player looking to create a double-team.

CAR22 Stankhoven survives the 1v2 (as discussed here) and then slip the puck out of the pile. VGK’s C cannot be in two places at once. Its weak-side winger must hold the middle of the slot. Consequently, CAR71 Hall is available near the strong-side dot (a.k.a. the honey hole)
